ECO-DESIGN

SMC2 designs buildings that comply with a realistic environmental approach.

By associating exclusive construction principles and low ecological impact materials, SMC2 limits waste and excessive consumption to preserve the planet and ensure the pleasure of regular sporting activity.

Saving energy from construction to use

SMC2 has reduced the density of the construction materials used thereby reducing the energy required to produce them. The structures are also designed to minimise energy costs during use.

Ecological materials

SMC2 constructions mainly made of wood. Wood is the only material with a negative CO2 footprint and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Better still, its transformation into a construction material requires 130 times less energy than aluminium and 60 times less than steel. SMC2 only uses European wood from sustainably managed forests. The other materials used are all 100% recyclable; the fabric membrane is reconditioned according to a specific process.

Life cycle assessment

 

SMC2 sports facilities are submitted to an LCA (life cycle assessment) to evaluate their real environmental impact in 12 target areas :

 

  • Greenhouse effect
  • Ozone layer

 

Our LCAs are presented for critical review to the Saint-Etienne eco-design centre as part of a real, realistic approach.

Our design choices are measured and part of an environmental solution optimised to protect the environment.

CARBON FOOTPRINT

SMC2’s carbon footprint measures the overall impact of the company’s activities on global warming. This initiative has enabled the identification of several possible ways of reducing CO2 waste significantly.

 

For example, since our 2012 carbon footprint, a number of actions have been implemented including:

  • A wood boiler on our new site in Mornant. This installation enables us to do without natural gas, a major producer of CO2.
  • The installation of automated systems to manage lighting (presence detectors, light intensity regulators). Electricity consumption has remained stable in spite of the increased surface area occupied since the change of site.
  • Business travel optimisation (rail transport preferred over flight).

The 2013 carbon footprint revealed the positive impacts of the actions implemented.

 

18 tonnes of CO2 have been saved in the energy and travel sectors over the past 12 months.
These savings represent the equivalent of greenhouse gases emitted by a small diesel car driving three times around the circumference of the earth along the equator.
