Berlin gets a new hot spot for basketball
01.01 2021

A new center for Berlin street ballers has sprung up in Prenzlauer Berg: On June 21, the new basketball grounds in the Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Sports Park were opened. Highlight of the facility is the covered main court under an outdoor hall by SMC2, which can be used in wind and weather.

All in all, three “Full Court” basketball fields with six modern, height-adjustable basket facilities and high-quality rubber flooring were created on the layout of the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark. The main court is also covered and equipped with grandstands and floodlights. The project is an early construction phase of the planned extensive refurbishment and conversion measures for the traditional sports complex in the heart of Berlin.

Sports Senator Andreas Geisel opened the facility on Thursday, June 21, highlighting the cooperation with the youth department of ALBA BERLIN, which looks after the fields in the future. The fields are now an additional training opportunity for club sports but are mainly the residents and the basketball players from all over Berlin, the opportunity for guided or non-guided basketball games offer. In addition, there will be several streetball tournaments in the future.

The idea behind the project is to offer a freely accessible sports facility that can be used all year round and in all weather conditions, thus offering great potential for use. The outdoor hall above the main court fulfills exactly this objective: The structure consists of a glulam structure, is covered with a textile membrane and protects the pitch from rain and snow. At the same time, the textile membrane is translucent, so no artificial lighting is needed during the day and players can play in even, natural light. In addition, the membrane offers a high level of thermal and acoustic comfort and thus guarantees one thing above all: enjoy playing in any weather! In addition, the outdoor hall made of wood and membrane is a real eye-catcher, making the new facility in Prenzlauer Berg a real hot spot for basketball players.
