ATHLETICS HALL – GUILERS (FRANCE)

Design and conception of a temperate-controlled athletics hall in Guilers (France).

SMC2 built a 46 x 96 m athletics hall with a textile membrane roof. Fabric was chosen for its acoustic, lighting and thermal qualities. Athletes can train all year round on these athletics tracks in optimum conditions without worrying about the weather. The sound doesn’t reverberate off the walls, thanks to the flexibility of the lightweight envelope. Its translucency allows natural light to illuminate the sports hall, without the need for artificial lighting during the day. Its white colour reflects the sun’s rays to maintain a pleasant ambient temperature in both summer and winter.

In more technical terms, the roof consists of a stretched canvas with aluminium profiles, a condensation sheath, a waterproofing sheath and tensioning bars with their galvanised supports. SMC2 also managed the rainwater with galvanised steel gutters. A dehumidification system was installed in the athletics hall, along with a ventilation system to ensure good air renewal. Finally, for a more personalised look, the hall’s textile façades are screen-printed.
